Julian Velard is a native New Yorker writing perfect and unorthodox pop tunes with a voice that sounds like it came straight off the Dock of the Bay. Blending effortless cool, with a naturally charming motor mouth, he has created his own brand of tin-pan alley, Broadway inspired piano pop.
A former Parisian street sweeper and nursery school gym teacher, Julian was plucked from relative obscurity in 2007 after being discovered on MySpace. He found himself at the center of a record company bidding war, eventually signing with the legendary label EMI. The Sunday Times have called him “A tantalizing prospect. Catchy but complicated; a surprisingly rare combination” and Time Out has compared him to Harry Nilsson and Tom Waits.
He has toured extensively nationally and internationally, sharing the stage with a wide variety of acts, musical and otherwise. The list includes Jamie Cullum, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Goldfrapp, Rumer, Kate Nash, Jose Gonzalez, Michael Kiwanuka, Ben Howard, SNL’s Horatio Sanz, and The League’s Paul Scheer.
In addition to recording 3 albums and various EPs, Julian has written scores of songs for others, including mutli-platinum selling UK Pop Sensation Olly Murs and The New York Knicks. He is also a regular guest on various NPR’s programs, including the musical trivia show Ask Me Another and Scott Simon’s Wonderful Town.
